The Conservative Party leader, who should head the administrative government, went on his honeymoon to Slovenia last week when the central bank warned inflation would exceed 13% in the autumn, sending the UK into its longest recession since the 2008 financial crisis.
British Finance Minister Nadim Zahawi was also away from London.
A Downing Street spokesperson said: “By the agreement, it is not up to the Prime Minister to make major budget changes during this (interim) period. It will be up to the future Prime Minister.”
Boris Johnson resigned in early July after months of scandal. Conservative Party members will elect their successor in August, which will be announced on September 5.
Since announcing his resignation, Boris Johnson has already been criticized for the absence of crisis meetings during the historic heat wave that hit the UK and the failure to welcome English footballers after the unprecedented victory in the European Championship.
Instead, he married Carrie Johnson and last week went on vacation to Slovenia, where he told local television he had a “fabulous” time. “We had a wonderful honeymoon. We climbed every mountain available, snorkeled in lakes, and biked,” he said.
“Such an economic crisis requires strong leadership and urgent action, but instead we have a ‘conservative’ party.” [Conservador] Labor MP Rachel Reeves said.
“There has to be someone responsible,” Gordon Brown, a former Labor prime minister, told ITV. “There is a void to be filled.”
“If we wait for the new prime minister, it will be too late,” Brown warned, urging Boris Johnson and his successor candidates – Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak – to agree on emergency budget measures.
“The prime minister is expected to bring the candidates together over the next two weeks to agree a solution and help individuals and businesses pay their energy bills,” said Tony Dunker, head of the powerful British employers’ union CBI.
Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon called today in a letter for a meeting of the heads of government of the four British countries “to agree on urgent measures to help those who need it most.”
