yAvid and Sunak were two of the main drivers of Johnson’s departure from Downing Street, after their resignations in early July led to dozens of resignations by senior British officials in protest against the then prime minister.
Javid wrote on Twitter, “Our country is in dire need of economic stability, sensible decisions and strong leadership. It is very clear that Rishi Sunak has what it takes to face the challenges that lie ahead,” stressing that Sunak is the “certain person.”
This was, to date, the clearest expression of support for Sunak, who has yet to confirm his participation in the primary election process to succeed Truss, who resigned on Thursday.
And the former chancellor of the exchequer appeared, before, after the departure of Boris Johnson, over the final controversy he lost to Liz Truss.
The Conservative Party today opened bids for a second leadership election in three months, following the resignations of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss on Thursday in July.
The leader of the British House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt, has today become the front-runner to succeed Liz Truss.
“I am encouraged by the support of colleagues who want a fresh start, a united party and leadership for the national interest,” he wrote on Twitter.
Mordaunt, who came third behind Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak in the previous local elections, said he wanted to “unify the country and keep promises”. [do Partido Conservador] and win” in the next legislative elections.
The minister responsible for relations with Parliament is a favorite of hard-line conservatives and it has been speculated that she might cut a deal with Sunak to cede one in favor of the other.
To be eligible, nominated MPs need the support of at least 100 colleagues by the Monday deadline of 14:00 local time (same time in Lisbon).
The first reserved vote for the Conservative parliamentary group is due to take place on the same day if more than one candidate qualifies.
The final candidates will be submitted to an electronic vote of the 170,000 Conservative Party activists, with the result announced on Friday.
Boris Johnson and former finance minister Rishi Sunak are the two candidates, but neither has confirmed the candidacy.
Truss’ successor will be appointed prime minister and invited by King Charles III to form a government as leader of the parliamentary majority party.
