President Jair Bolsonaro awarded himself this Tuesday the Medal of Merit from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. The honour, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, was given to other authorities, such as the Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres, the judges of the Federal Supreme Court, Cassio Márquez and André Mendonca, the Prosecutor of the Republic. Augusto Arras and Federal Police Director Paolo Maiorino were each nominated by Bolsonaro.
According to the Department of Justice, the Medal of Merit is awarded to those who “have distinguished themselves in the exercise of their profession, and have become worthy of class recognition,” whether individuals and corporations, military companies and civil institutions, national or foreign, who have related services, and have contributed to the growth and strengthening of the Ministry of Justice or its associated bodies. .
This is not the first time that Bolsonaro has been awarded the Medal of Scientific Merit: in November 2021, the Brazilian president awarded himself the Medal of Scientific Merit, shortly after he criticized a series of statements deemed unscientific during a critical phase of the Covid-19 epidemic.
