According to pediatrician Adelson Cardoso, hand-foot-and-mouth syndrome is caused by a virus that lives in the human digestive tract, and usually affects infants and children under the age of five.
The doctor also adds that the virus is transmitted through direct contact with infected people, through saliva, secretions, or even contaminated food and objects.
Symptoms include vomiting and red spots in the area of the hands, feet and mouth just like the name of the disease.
Dr. Adelson also stresses that although it is a predominant disease in children, adults can also get it.
Preventive care relies on good hygiene, frequent hand washing, and avoiding crowds, especially on cold days, when the virus can easily manifest itself.
