Moscow, Dec 11 (ANSA) – In another episode of the crisis between Belarus and the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States, the Minsk government announced on Saturday (11) the introduction of a ban on agricultural food products. “Hostile nations” from January 1, 2022.
Since August last year, Western nations have imposed a series of political and economic sanctions against the allies of President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime. The president, considered the “last dictator of Europe” since coming to power in 1994, has been accused of rigging elections and violating the human rights of his opponents.
Lukashenko announced the ban during a meeting of the Eurasian Economic Union’s High Council, according to state news agency FELTA. The move is another sign of the Russian president’s dependence on the government’s only key partner.
According to the politician, Belarus imported about $ 530 million worth of goods in the first 10 months of 2021.
Lukashenko promised that there would be no shortage in the country.
The country will stop importing goods from Canada, Norway, Albania, Iceland, Montenegro, northern Macedonia and Switzerland, with the exception of the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom. Fresh pork, salami and sausages in general, fruits, nuts and salt are the main products affected. (ANSA).
