Orem Municipal Council, in an extraordinary session on the Fourth of July, unanimously approved a motion calling for improving the provision of health care in the municipality. It was put forward by elected Orlando Cavaco, on behalf of the municipal group of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), and the motion was approved by all parties with a seat on the body. The elected agreed that “public health services in the municipality of Urem are on the way to complete collapse,” noting that “there are more than fifteen thousand people without a family doctor, and the various health expansions and the Urem health center operate without human resources, materials, and emergency service in Medio Tejo and Leria hospital centers are often overcrowded.”
The note stated that since the municipality and the parish councils affiliated with the municipality do not have jurisdiction in the region to solve the problems, the officials have already expressed their concerns several times to the Ministry of Health, but they have not received any response so far. “The health problems we are experiencing in the municipality of Urem are very serious and worrying. That is why we, mayors, residents and civil society, come to the claim and demand effective, real and effective measures from the Ministry of Health to improve the conditions of access to health, “said Orlando Cavaco.
Some of the requirements are the appointment of a sufficient number of family physicians so that the people of the county receive the necessary medical care and follow-up; Replacement of the Standing Attendance Service (SAP) in the health center in Orem, which will provide better conditions for access to health services and mitigate the influx of refugees to hospital emergencies; Request an urgent meeting with the Minister of Health to discuss solutions in order to reduce the dangerous situation of primary care in the governorate.
