In a statement, the British insurer confirmed that the name Antonio Simoes was chosen following a “worldwide and rigorous selection process”. Thus, the Portuguese director, who left the European leadership of Santander, succeeds Nigel Wilson, who has held the position of CEO of the insurance company since 2012.
Portuguese Antonio Simoes is the new CEO of the British insurance company Legal & General. The CEO is no longer in charge of Santander Bank for Europe, a position that has since been held, on an accrual basis, by Santander’s CEO in Portugal, Pedro Castro e Almeida.
Antonio Simoes has been with the bank since 2010, having previously worked at HSBC for 13 years, where he held the positions of Chief Executive Officer for Europe and the UK. The director was also a partner in McKinsey & Company.
In a statement, the British insurer confirmed that the name Antonio Simoes was chosen following a “worldwide and rigorous selection process”, led by the head of the insurer, John Kingman.
He thus succeeds Portuguese director Nigel Wilson, who has held the position of CEO of Legal & General since 2012, having “expressed in January his intention to give up the life of an executive,” the press release adds.
