More and more smartphone manufacturers are offering extended update periods for their Android devices. Some actually offer up to 7 years of system updates… but do the devices last that long?
It appears that Google is now working on a new feature for Android 15, which will allow users to get an idea of the useful life of their devices.
According to the portal ithomeAndroid 15 beta 1 source code contains a new function called “Device Diagnostics”, which will be able to analyze the device and predict the remaining life of the device.
This function will allow the system to evaluate the condition of various components, to indicate their estimated life span. This analyzes the battery, processor, and storage, among other hardware details.
Although this new feature is built into Android, it should not be available for all devices. This is because the devices must also allow the system to read some information about them, so that a basis can be established for creating an estimate of their “age”.
At the same time, this new feature must arrive in an application programming interface (API) format, so other applications may use the collected data to provide this information. This could allow custom apps to “estimate” the age of devices to start appearing with Android 15 in mind.
At the moment, this function is only planned for Android 15, but it is still unknown whether it will reach the final version of the systems.
