The new leader of the “Dragon” officially took office on Tuesday after defeating Pinto da Costa in the April 27 elections. In his inaugural speech, he did not forget the legacy left by Pinto da Costa.
Andre Villas-Boas was sworn in on Tuesday as president of FC Porto in a ceremony that began at noon and included three words.
On April 27, the members of the “Blue and White” rallied strongly and decided to change the direction of the club. The club’s former president received 80.28% of the votes, compared to 19.52% for Pinto da Costa, who has served as president since 1982.
However, at the moment, it is not known when the former ‘Dragon’ coach will take over power at SAD, as the current members have not resigned from their positions yet.
Only after the new management bodies of the club take office, can the general assembly of shareholders be called to inaugurate the new formation of SAD.
This Tuesday is the day that marks the beginning of a new page in the club. At the Estádio do Dragão, more than 400 guests attended the Villas-Boas opening ceremony, which featured speeches by Lourenço Pinto, the outgoing President of the General Assembly Board of Directors, and Antonio Tavares, the new President of the Board of Directors. To the General Assembly, and finally the new president of FC Porto.
Greetings from the bosses
Upon his arrival at the ceremony site, Pinto da Costa was greeted with a hug by André Villas-Boas.
Speech by Lourenço Pinto
The outgoing President of the AG begins by thanking Pinto da Costa for his service to the club and wishing the new board members well. He also wishes his successor “more luck” than he had during the period in which he took office.
Antonio Tavares sayings
The new Chairman of the AG Board of Directors begins by thanking Lourenço Pinto for the work done on the “Invicta” logo. He asserts that he “faces the situation responsibly” in order to “help the club continue its path of victories.” Regarding Pinto da Costa, he stated that the legendary president “will continue to play an important role” in the life of the “Dragons”.
After all the new members of FC Porto’s governing bodies officially took up their positions, Andre Villas-Boas began his first speech as president.
Inauguration speech of Villas-Boas
It starts with remembering the journey as a coach of FC Porto and greeting the staff, players and fans of FC Porto.
“Being a portista is a state of mind, and it is in this unity that we find ourselves here,” he said.
He stresses that his team will work hard to “raise the good name of FC Porto” and recalls that the results of the club’s recent elections revealed the members’ sense of change.
He promises that FC Porto will be “winning, invincible, timeless, feared by its opponents”, but also “transparent and financially sustainable”. Don’t forget Lourenço Pinto, whom you thank for allowing the elections to take place “in a perfect way”:
“In this solemn act of democracy, which I am sure is an honor for your Excellency, history has been made, and for this, on behalf of all Portistas, I thank you for your dedication, commitment and courage.”
“We will fight for this club together.”
He addresses partners and supporters, saying that they will fight and win together:
“We will fight for this club together, on the same side of the fence, so that we can all win, not only those who left a mark on the past, but also those who will shape the future.”
Furthermore, it promises commitment, dedication and love for FC Porto, a motto that promises to be ‘body and soul’.
As expected, he also does not forget Pinto da Costa, the “Chief of Bosses”.
“There are no words to describe or even thank you for everything you have done for FC Porto, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa. The boss of bosses is not a metaphor! It is a memory, it is respect and gratitude, but above all work, victory and achievement.” Glory is a card of service, which brings with it a living and present idea: “This is the FC Porto that I leave to you, take care of it.” Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa: This is the way we will do it that is immortal and will always be respected.
He assumes that the process of regaining the blue and white badge will be “long,” but he explains that he will not give up and that he has “a clear vision and a specific project.”
“Right now, we are all here united to fight to keep winning. Our future – and I truly say our destiny – will come one day later to hand over an even bigger and more victorious victory to our children and grandchildren.”
Appeal to SAD elements
He also appeals to “the common sense of the Porto Sade administration”, stating that the resignation of its members “will never be considered an act of escape, but rather a noble act” that would elevate them.
Finally, he declared that FC Porto “does not have two presidents”, but rather a leader elected “with the clear will of the members to change”.
“To delay the inevitable is to postpone building a stronger FC Porto for the future, and I am sure that is what their Excellencies want,” he concludes.
