For 38 years, Ovibeja and the cattle have been working hand in hand since the beginning of this exhibition, which is presented by “All Alentejo of this World”. Despite the tradition, in many respects, this phenomenon differs in very different areas, by the identity of its novelty.
In this edition, which celebrates its second day this Friday, the limousine cows, due to their large size, have an attraction similar to that of small pigs.
However, the heads and black feet of three yellow-painted goats circling the exhibition grounds attracted attention. Southern InformationAs well as the audience around.
These are Suffolk sheep. Present in Belgium and France, these sheep came to the Portuguese territory a few decades ago from the United Kingdom.
Diego Grossa, 35, born in Beja, is a Suffolk sheep breeder and explains that it is the most advanced sheep breed in the world.
“These shepherds, as I take them, are pure breeders, not for the sale of breeding animals and for the improvement of the flock, for ordinary lambs or for industrial hybrids, that is, for consumption.”
Suffolk are “more modest, succulent and more modest goats” than are commonly found in the countryside of Allendez.
“Among other things, an average lamb of about 500, 600 grams a day, about 250 grams a day, of a lamb like this,” explains the breeder.
“It’s always been my favorite breed, to be different, to be calm. My two-year-old son tends the sheep alone,” says the breeder with satisfaction.
“We have about 70 animals here (in Ovipija),” says Diego Grossa, who forms a national breed of 20 breeders from across the country, from Ponte de Lima to Albuquerque.
