Brazil’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Luciana Santos, and United Kingdom’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development, James Cleverley, visited the AmazonFACE research facility on May 23. The system is 80 km north of Manas, and the program towers over the Amazon rainforest there.
During the visit, the British Prime Minister announced a contribution of two million pounds to the project. With this, the UK is adding £7.3 million in support to AmazonFACE from 2021. Minister Luciana Santos announced the release of funds during the visit.
“AmazonFACE results will help the international scientific community better understand how the world’s largest rainforest can help mitigate global climate change, as well as increase the precision of its vulnerability to global warming. This initiative has a central contribution to more appropriate responses to achieving global climate goals. AmazonFACE is a major scientific collaboration between the two countries. The United Kingdom is Brazil’s second largest science and technology partner, and has collaborated on at least 700 bilateral research initiatives over the past seven years.Brazil informed the government.
“AmazonFACE embodies the great potential of Brazilian science to provide scientific evidence and contribute to the fight against climate change. It is this talent that makes us a scientific force in Latin America and an important link in building international relations in Brazil.Minister Luciana Santos said.
“I am delighted to be the first British President to visit Brazil in many years. I came here to renew and strengthen our bond. It is a partnership marked by shared values such as freedom, democracy and concern for the state of the planet.
