She told the journalist, “Your husband is voting for me.”
The harsh response of the Brazilian president came in response to a question by journalist Amanda Klein in an interview on the Jovim Pam TV channel, which is ideologically identified with the governor.
Klein asked about a complaint filed by the opposition to the courts, based on a journalistic investigation in which Bolsonaro and some members of his family acquired 50 properties, between 1990 and 2022, always paid in cash.
According to the complaint, these unusual cash purchases could cover money laundering and hide funds from illegal sources.
“Amanda, you are married to someone who votes for me. Your husband votes for me. Bolsonaro replied, without hiding his annoyance.
Klein said his private life was not at stake in the interview and Bolsonaro replied, “Why me?” , to whom the journalist explained that Bolsonaro, as president and candidate for re-election, is a “public figure”.
Bolsonaro’s reaction generated a wave of solidarity with Klein, citing other ill-timed responses by the president to other journalists, and he was the target of protests from the opposition, which saw “another semblance of machismo” in his stance.
“Bolsonaro uses his old-fashioned tactics when he has no way of explaining his lies. He attacks and excludes, and best if with a woman, ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s campaign coordinator, said he is attacking and excluding all of his masculinity.
On August 28, in the first debate between the presidential candidates, Bolsonaro reciprocated a question posed by journalist Vera Magalhaes to Ciro Gomez about the government’s denial of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“You are a disgrace to the Brazilian press,” the president told the journalist.
