Coco, a Labrador retriever, is being treated for alcoholism in the UK. According to the animal rescue group that took him in for treatment, the dog must be monitored 24 hours a day because he has very severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms. According to a British newspaper telegraph, It was the first dog to be treated for alcoholism.
“We’d like to introduce you to a new member of the Dunroamin Special Care Unit, an adorable two-year-old named Coco. He has been with us for over a month requiring intensive care since his arrival. “His story is tragic and proves how important our special care unit is,” the animal shelter said.
Coco was taken with another dog to the institution in Plympton, England, after her owner died. As far as they could find, the owner had left the liquor in places accessible to the animals. That’s how they got addicted.
When they arrived at the shelter, the animals began experiencing seizures as a result of the lack of alcohol. Coco was sedated for four weeks to prevent any adverse reactions. His companion eventually dies despite the team’s efforts.
It is known that the animal has already moved out of danger and adapted to a new way of life. “Alcohol for the dog, innovation for us,” read the company’s Facebook post.
A Dunroamin Special Care Unit Coco hopes to be accepted again, although the scenario is still unlikely. “He’s starting to act like a normal dog. He’s not ready for adoption yet. Although physically he seems to be on the mend, mentally he’s very anxious at times,” they explained.
The Animal Care Society took the opportunity to alert the community to the number of deaths associated with dogs suffering from these problems. “No one knows how these dogs became alcoholics, but we do know that Koko would not have survived without our care.”
