MMore than a thousand sea lions have occupied Pier 39 in San Francisco, USA. According to the international press, this is the largest concentration in the past fifteen years.
The animals were apparently drawn to a “banquet of anchovies” in San Francisco Bay and delighted tourists, much as they had done since they arrived at the pier about 35 years ago.
According to The Guardian, the first sea lion arrived at the pier in 1989. It had a piece of fishing net attached to its neck, which is why it was given the nickname “flea collar.” After their arrival, hundreds of mammals followed.
Dan Costa, a professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz and an expert on marine mammals, explained that many males stop at Pier 39 when heading south to the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California, where they will meet females to mate. “They are wandering, nomadic creatures that tend to move north and south throughout the year,” Costa said.
