Consuming chocolate with more cocoa can have positive effects on mental and cognitive health, the cardiovascular system, and metabolism
A study published in the scientific journal “Nutrients” showed that eating chocolate in the morning can bring health benefits. Food consumption can have positive effects on mental and cognitive health, the cardiovascular system, and metabolism. However, to get all these benefits, it is necessary to eat chocolate with more cocoa.
Cocoa is rich in flavonoids, substances with an antioxidant effect that act in cell aging, in the brain, in cardiovascular health and in cholesterol. The more bitter the chocolate, the more cocoa, and, accordingly, the greater the benefits. A 30g portion containing 70% cocoa contains an amount of oxidants comparable to an apple or a glass of wine.
According to nutritionist Lara Natacci, milk chocolate contains bioactive compounds, but in small amounts. “Milk chocolate contains four times less antioxidants than the most intense type of chocolate. The ideal is to consume 70%, but chocolate is already considered intense from 51%,” explains the nutritionist.
Natacci offers advice for anyone who wants to increase the percentage of cocoa in their chocolate: start with 55% chocolate, work your way up to 60% and gradually increase the percentage until your taste buds get used to it. And I don’t mind “liking” 90% cocoa chocolate. Focus on the 70%.
Consuming chocolate can bring health benefits, but it is important to remember that it should be eaten in moderation along with a healthy, balanced diet.
