UA gray seal whose life was in danger was rescued after a days-long mission in Cornwall, south-west England, and the animal was safely rescued.
The seal was found in the port of St. After Ives failed to rescue the animal over the past week, a large group of environmentalists put her in a cage and managed to cut the plastic around her neck.
In videos posted on social media, experts from British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) created a barrier with cardboard and forced entry into the cage. The organization explained that the ring was “too stuck” and caused damage to the neck.
BDMLR’s Dan Jarvis told the BBC the ring had only been in the seal for “a few days” but was too stuck to require stronger tools.
“We were all waiting for the right moment, because it was very important that we didn’t chase her too soon, and if we lost her in port we wouldn’t have another chance to try this,” explained Jarvis.
Jarvis said the animal eventually calmed down, giving officers enough time to block the entrance to the harbor tunnel, which was made difficult by the “strong current”.
The seal has been listed by the Marine Conservation Society since 2003, and has been given the name Wings (‘Wings’ in English).
