The Chinese National Space Administration (ANEC) confirmed that the robot began exploring the surface of the Red Planet today, a week after it landed on the probe that transported it. The spacecraft began to roll on the surface of Mars at 14:00 in Beijing (03:40 in Lisbon).
The Chinese mission is one of the most ambitious in the country, having made use of the same Mars launch window that NASA used in March 2020, having already managed to put perseverance and creative helicopter on Mars. He left Earth in June 2020 and after more than two months in orbit around the planet, he had the “amartagem” after minutes of horror that always involved this stage of the mission.
The spacecraft landed on Utopia Planetia, a plain located in the northern hemisphere of Mars, and NASA shared a map indicating the location of all explorers on the planet’s soil.
The mission is expected to last at least 90 Mars days (about three Earth months), during which it will transmit, via a probe located in the planet’s orbit, high-resolution 3D images, analyze the composition of the Zorunga surface and search for traces of frozen water, among other tasks.
Zhurong has a maximum speed of 200 meters per hour and can overcome obstacles of up to 30 cm, as well as climb slopes with an inclination of up to 20 degrees.
The first images were taken on Mars
Since landing on the Marche land, the probe has conducted checks, but it has also shared photos. There is a Color Photo, Black and White Photo, and Animation, released by China Space Agency, As it testifies to the Zhurong rover’s connection with the Martian soil. Both images show part of the equipment on Martian soil.
The color image was collected by the navigation camera installed in the rear of the Zhurong, which shows a portion of the rover’s solar panels and communication system.
The black and white image, taken by another camera, is to help avoid obstacles along the road and is mounted in the front of the rover, as it shows part of the planet and the landing slope of the probe. The animation shows the moment when the rover detached from the probe, positioning itself on Mars.
So far, NASA has only led expeditions to Mars, such as the one underway now whose star are the Persevering Rover and the Innovation Helicopter., only you Successfully complete your fifth adventure adventure. Thus, this is another record-breaking moment for China in the space exploration missions class.
Zhurong begins the exploration mission himself, supported by his six navigation tools, to gather information about the planet’s conditions.
The Tianwen-1 mission reached Mars orbit in February, after six months of travel. Passed Three months of watching the red planet From its orbit and in May it went to the next step of the mission: the Zhurong rover landing on the surface of Mars. The hardware check took a few days and everything looks now ready for exploration on Earth.
Zhurong consists of six wheels and is covered with four solar panels. It weighs about 240 lbs. See more details about the Thiane-1 mission in the gallery.
