“IIdentifying a flaw in the Poly network architecture would be one of the best moments of my life,” commented the author of the theft totaling $613 million (522 million euros) in various digital currencies, of which he already owns a part.
He is now considered a “moral hacker” by the Polly Network, the victim of the attack.
“At 08:00 GMT, 342 million digital assets have already been returned, including 4.6 million in Ethereum, 252 million in BinanceCoin and 85 million in OxPolygon,” the company said via a Twitter message.
Poly Network is a decentralized finance platform that allows you to transfer digital currencies.
Despite being a victim of this robbery on Tuesday, Polly’s network took a conciliatory tone with the hacker from the start and urged him to call and return the money.
He now calls it “Mr. White Hat,” referring to “hackers” who hack computer systems to identify flaws and help organizations enhance their security.
“While our communication with Mr. White Hat continues, the remaining assets in Ethereum are gradually being transferred to the address requested by Mr. White Hat,” Polly Network added.
“We hope that Mr. Chapio Branco will return all digital assets to users,” the company added.
A person claiming to be a hacker provided explanations in a text in the form of questions and answers, which were posted on the platform.
“Why did you move the assets? To keep them,” he said, after discovering an anomaly.
He added, “Honestly, I had more selfish ambitions, to do anything funny but not malicious…Then I realized that being a moral leader would be the coolest hack I could ever do.” .
The case sparked a debate about the usefulness of encouraging this type of practice to enhance the security of decentralized finance.
“I would suggest a 5-10% bounty for digital hacking,” wrote someone from BinomiaPool on Twitter, which develops security solutions for downloads. “This could be a win-win solution: Hackers don’t go to jail. Society suffers acceptable losses. The law is improved.”
Computer security company SlowMist has reported that it is on the path of a “hacker”. But it is difficult to know whether Mr. White Hat will be recognized, rewarded or prosecuted.
The US Federal Police and the Department of Justice did not respond to AFP’s requests for information.
