The New York Fire Department reported today that Caleb Ganzer, 35, was caught red-handed by security cameras that set fire to wooden structures in the tents of two restaurants in January and July.
This type of structure doubled during the pandemic on city streets to allow people to enjoy the spaces without being inside.
Ganzer was also photographed setting fire to a pile of trash in June. All three incidents occurred between midnight and 4:30 a.m.
The first incident occurred on July 13, in which Ganzer set a wooden structure on fire. After their arrest, the firefighters became aware of the link between two other fires caused by the same method, one on January 8 and the other on June 26.
Sommer of the Year by Food and Wine in 2017, Ganzer was charged with two counts of arson as well as other crimes, including recklessness.
Ganzer’s motives have not been disclosed, managing partner of the luxury New York wine bar Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels.
“Fortunately, there were no casualties in these incidents, and the suspect was arrested before he could start another fire,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro.
