From Tuesday, the city of Porto will have three supermarkets belonging to the Spanish chain of Mercadona. The company announced the opening of its third store in the city, on Rua de Diogo Botelho, in the Fluvial district. The opening was attended by the mayor of Porto Rui Moreira.
According to a memo sent by the company, the new store created 65 new permanent contract jobs. The sales area is 1900 square meters and it has 240 parking spaces, ten of which are for electric vehicle charging.
The new space respects the 6.25 store concept, through which Mercadona intends, by 2025, to reduce 25% of plastic, make all plastic packaging recyclable and recycle all plastic waste generated in its facilities. In the note, Joan Ribeiro, Regional Director of External Relations for the Porto da Mercadona region, stated that it is “a great pride to open the third supermarket in the city of Porto, strengthening our presence in this one of the oldest areas of the city”.
With this opening, Mercadona now has 22 stores in Portugal. By the end of the year, the company plans to open seven new supermarkets. The next opening is scheduled for July 27 in Espinho. At the end of 2020, the Spanish group had more than 1,700 employees in Portugal.
