French President Emmanuel Macron announced today that vaccination against COVID-19 will become mandatory for all professionals working with vulnerable people in hospitals and nursing homes from September 15.
In addition to healthcare professionals, this obligation also includes all nursing and hospital personnel, including administrative staff.
Also, people who provide assistance to the elderly at home will be covered by this procedure.
Altogether, in France, the procedure can cover about one million people.
Macron also said that from September 15 there will be checks in hospitals and at home to verify that health professionals who come into contact with sick or elderly people have up-to-date vaccinations.
“When science offers us the means to protect ourselves, we must use them with confidence,” the French president said during a call with his country.
The president also said he would consider extending mandatory vaccination of the entire population if resistance to receiving two doses of the vaccine persists.
“Depending on the development of the situation, we must undoubtedly raise the question of mandatory vaccination of all French, but I am making a choice in secret and solemnly requesting the vaccination of all our unvaccinated citizens as of today, as soon as possible.”
Emmanuel Macron called this time of year the “summer of mobilization” for vaccination, noting that when school returns, there will be vaccination centers in schools.
Also looking at the “rent,” the president said seniors, who started vaccinating in January, will start being called in to get a third dose of the vaccine from September.
