Brazil was confirmed today (1) as the host of the Copa America, in an announcement made by the Prime Minister of the Civic House, Luis Eduardo Ramos. In the announcement, Ramos said “cohesion won,” noting that his country already hosts matches in the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sol Americana, Camponato Brasileiro and state championships. Brazil responded to a request from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) to host the tournament. The Copa America kicks off on July 13 and runs until July 10.
The original stadiums for the tournament were Colombia and Argentina. The Colombians surrendered due to the serious social crisis that swept the country. Later, the Argentine government also withdrew from the event due to the worsening epidemic in Argentina. With nearly 45 million inhabitants, Argentina has recorded more than 3.6 million cases of the disease and 76,000 deaths from the virus.
