A study released Friday (28) by the Italian Ministry of Health showed that the British variant of Sars-Cov-2 is the most prevalent in the country, while the Brazilian type has slightly increased its dominance.

According to research by the Institute for Graduate Studies (ISS), a technical scientific body linked to the government, variant B.1.1.7, which has emerged in the UK, corresponds to 88% of new cases of Covid-19 in Italy.

During a press conference, the head of the International Space Station, Silvio Brusavero, explained that the prevalence of the P.1 variant, originally from Manaus, rose slightly and equates to 7.3% of new infections, while South Africa remained stable (0.3%). ).

Indian strain (B.1.617.2) equates to 1% of cases and Nigerian strain (B.1.525) to 0.8%, especially in cases of infection recorded in central Italy. However, there are outbreaks in all regions caused by the Indian variant, although the British type is predominant.

However, Prosavero reported that “there is a decrease in the ongoing epidemic in all European countries, and in Italy there is a decrease in all regions.”

“The infection rate has also decreased: in fact, there are more areas that are decreasing, with fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 residents. The average age of cases is 39 years and the hospital age is 60 years, which means that the elderly vaccination campaign carries fruit,” he said.

“But we note the importance of vaccinating even the smallest of the population, because they are not exempt from infection,” he added.

Finally, the head of the International Space Station emphasized that “the curves show that as coverage increases, vaccination decreases weekly incidence, hospitalization and mortality rates.”
