The Biden initiative signals US concern about an end to Israel’s role in hostilities with Hamas, although it does not join the Democratic Party’s growing demands for an immediate ceasefire.
The White House says the president has reiterated his steadfast support for Israel’s right to defend itself against indiscriminate attacks.
The fighting began on May 10, after weeks of tension between Israelis and Palestinians in East Jerusalem, which culminated in clashes on the mosque compound, the third holy site of Islam after the holiest of Judaism.
The massive rocket fire by armed groups in Gaza against Israel contrasts with the systematic bombardment of the Israeli forces on the Gaza Strip, killing about 200 Palestinians, including 59 minors and 39 women, in addition to more than 1,300 wounded.
On the Israeli side, 10 dead were counted, including two minors, at a time when attacks by both sides continue without a hint of a truce.
