London, United Kingdom-British Sports Minister Stuart Andrew will wear a rainbow-coloured “OneLove” badge at the England-Wales match at the Qatar 2022 World Cup on Tuesday (29).
FIFA has banned players from using this accessory during the World Cup.
England and Wales are among seven European countries to have abandoned plans to carry the anti-discrimination symbol after being threatened with sporting sanctions by FIFA.
British Home Secretary Nancy Faeser wore a “OneLove” armband as she sat next to FIFA President Gianni Infantino during Germany’s 2-1 defeat to Japan.
Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar. Several fans reported that stadium security confiscated rainbow-coloured items during group stage matches.
“Without a doubt, I will wear the OneLove badge,” Andrew, who is gay, told ITV News.
“I want to show support and I was happy to see the German minister who attended the match wearing this outfit. I think it’s important to do that,” he added.
