Peggy: England’s “ugliest” dog is Hollywood’s new star
The big-headed lady joins the Marvel Universe in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” coming to Portugal this Thursday, July 25.
“To be honest, I don’t think she’s ugly. I think her face is really pretty,” Holly Middleton told PiT in 2023, when Peggy earned the title of “UK’s Ugliest Bitch.” At the time, the family had a pug and a Chinese crested dog. I never imagined that a year later Becky’s name would be on the lips of the world again after going to so many shows to deliver the mix.
Becky joins Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which arrives in Portugal on Thursday, July 25. The big girl plays Dogpool, the new four-legged companion of Marvel’s most troubled superhero. And what is so special about it? He resembles Deadpool’s (Ryan Reynolds) real name, Wade Wilson.
The action was shot in the United Kingdom and as soon as he met Peggy, Ryan Reynolds wanted to make the big girl the new protagonist. “I fought for her because she looks like the manifestation of Wade Wilson’s animal,” he told “Empire” magazine. Reynolds’ character, diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, has a disfigured appearance due to her inability to recover.
The new star dog has been following the cast of the third Bad Mouth Mercenary film and stealing hearts wherever he goes. The 37-year-old defender told PiT in a previous interview that he adopted Becky in 2018.
“We looked at local shelters, but couldn’t find a dog that was age-appropriate for our kids. So, we started looking online,” she shared. “We didn’t go looking for an unusual-looking dog, we knew we wanted to grow up with a puppy.”
At the time, Becky was six months old and was adopted as the last kitten in a random litter. “We fell in love with her the moment we saw her,” he recalls. Since then, the big-haired girl has been living with her new family in East Yorkshire, England. And in 2023, he became a minor celebrity when he won a competition organized by photography and design company Parrot Print, which aimed to choose the ugliest dog in the United Kingdom.
The author says that people don’t smile at their partner when they meet them on the street after the match. “Because of her appearance on TV and social media, people now come to pet her and take pictures. I feel all this has a very positive effect,” he pointed out. And with the success of her four-legged companion, Holly hopes more people will adopt unusual-looking animals.
“I want to encourage them not to ignore animals that are not aesthetically pleasing,” he told PiT. “I feel like that’s probably what happened to Peggy and she didn’t find her home until she was six months old. People look at her and think she’s sick or needs extra care because she doesn’t have fur. But she is no different from other dogs. He is very happy and healthy.
The third Mercenary movie is directed by Shawn Levy and will be the only Marvel movie to be released this year due to the Hollywood actors and screenwriters strike.
In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is recovering from injuries when he crosses paths with Deadpool. Together, the superheroes will try to defeat a common enemy – Cassandra Nova (Emma Corinne), the evil twin sister of Professor Charles Xavier.
The previous two films in the saga tell the story of Wade, an ex-soldier and mercenary, diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Realizing that his life is almost over, Wade volunteers for a scientific experiment that promises to cure the disease, but accepts the challenge of genetically modifying his body. After the intervention, the character returns as Deadpool, an indestructible anti-hero with healing superpowers and an unusual sense of humor.
