The leader of the Azorean Executive was speaking to journalists after he chaired the opening ceremony of the rehabilitation and expansion works of the Corfu Health Unit building, as part of a legal visit to the smallest island in the archipelago.
According to the head of the Azorean Executive Authority, the unit is equipped, technologically, “with the best that exists, in the form of a digital hospital,” to conduct remote consultations and monitor specialties.
The health unit in Ilha, where more than half a million euros were invested, is equipped with “a set of technological solutions that allow patients to be cared for, avoiding going to specialist doctors.”
Bolero, who was accompanied by the Regional Minister of Health and Social Security, Mónica Cidi, and the Regional Secretary of Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure, Berta Cabral, said that the work was difficult to implement, but its completion “positions Corfu towards the future.” In health care.
In turn, Monica Sidi, responsible for the health portfolio, explained that thanks to the intervention, there have been improvements in the provision of care to the community, and the Ilha do Corvo health unit is now equipped, among other areas, with an X-ray room. In terms of human resources, the Minister added that the health unit “doubled its human resources” in various fields, compared to 2019, as it currently includes two doctors and three nurses.
Corfu Municipal Council President Jose Manuel Silva told Lusa that the renovation work on the health unit is important for the smallest island in the archipelago.
“The more healthcare we have, the safer we feel, the less isolated we are,” the mayor said, noting that they are also “less dependent” on having to send patients to a referral hospital.
On the last day of the statutory visit to Corfu, the President of the Azorean Regional Government also inaugurated the project for the rehabilitation of public spaces and the construction of the “Casa da Vigia” in the Corfu Eco-Museum.
The old part of the city now contains a space that values “the entity, ethnography, memory and history of Corvinus and Corfu,” according to José Manuel Bolero.
The intervention, carried out by the Azorean Executive in cooperation with the municipality, includes, among other elements, a statue on display for visitors to represent the historic center of the city.
