Chiga Nas The European candidate admits the presence of Portuguese forces on Ukrainian territory and says he does not fear Russian retaliation. “To take revenge on Portugal, we had to take revenge on everyone.”
Antonio Tanger Correa, head of the Chega List of Europeans, said in an interview with CNN Portugal that “Ukraine should not give up territory,” but Russia “does not need to lose in a categorical way either.” What does it mean? “You can lose, or you can’t lose… An agreement is only good if it is positive for both parties – for example entering into the kind of enhanced cooperation with Russia in which the Russians feel comfortable.”
It is a thesis, says Tanger Correa, “like others,” but it is his own. Also in the field of hypotheses, the professional diplomat “in theory” admits the presence of Portuguese forces on the Ukrainian battlefield. “The concept is conceptually positive, but who will we lead in the country where we left the armed forces… so we will have to make an effort in this direction,” he points out, stressing that he does not. Fear of revenge from Putin’s state: “To take revenge on Portugal, one had to take revenge on everyone.”
The diplomat began the interview by emphasizing that he is not a Putinist, as Ruy Tavares accused him during the election campaign on June 9. He only commented “very well” on the text that acknowledged responsibility for the Ukrainian invasion of Kiev. “It was written well, as were others on the contrary,” he said, noting that today he does not regret doing it. “I didn’t defend it, I cited it – I’m not sorry, but if it were like that today I wouldn’t quote it again,” he points out, explaining that “his perception was not at all compatible with what was happening.” “Calling me a poutine is serious, boring and untrue.”
Regarding Sebastião Bugaleo and others who accused him of anti-Semitism due to the reference to warning Jews about the events of September 11, he admits to going to court after the election results. “It was a low-key attack in a campaign that he himself told me he wanted while rising, and it makes me sad that I don’t talk like that.”
Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he says he supports a two-state solution, but “in the midst of conflict, any solution is very complicated.” As for which side he’s on, he says he can’t say, “although we’ve always supported the Israelis” and “reason helps the Israelis much more than Hamas fighters.”
In an interview with CNN Portugal, Tanger Correa also stressed that it is necessary to “close the external borders”, so that “working conditions” are “guaranteed” for migrants who choose Portugal as their destination. “Working conditions should be guaranteed and they should not live like the animals they are not… Actually, I love animals, so the expression was unfortunate.”
