MThis morning, Russian soldiers entered an air base in Niger that serves American forces, according to Reuters.
An American official, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that this measure was implemented with the support of the country’s authorities, who want to try to expel the American army.
According to Reuters, the local military forces that govern the West African country have already asked the United States to withdraw nearly 1,000 military personnel from the country. It should be noted that, until last year’s coup, this was an essential partner in the fight against the rebels who killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
Everything indicates that Russian forces, after entering the base in question, occupied a separate hangar at Air Base 101, adjacent to Diori Hamani International Airport, in Niamey, the capital of Niger. This means that he did not mix with American forces.
However, this action puts US and Russian forces in close proximity, at a time of heightened military and diplomatic rivalry between the two countries due to the conflict in Ukraine.
