Authorities in India have arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ahead of the elections, and now want to uncover evidence of alleged bribery. However, they say this evidence may be present on your iPhone. Apple refuses to unlock the device. Is the American company correct?
No it's not!
Kejriwal is the president of the Aam Aadmi Party, also known as the Common Man Party, and was arrested along with two of his aides on Friday, March 29, 2024. Prime Minister Kejriwal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rival in the upcoming general elections, is currently in remand on charges of alleged corruption.
according to Indian ExpressAuthorities also confiscated four iPhones, including Kejriwal's phone. However, Kejriwal refused to unlock his iPhone, saying that if he did, he would be giving the Enforcement Directorate (ED) details about his election strategy and what are being described as pre-election alliances.
The Indian Express article begins with the fact that the ED has asked Apple to unlock the iPhone and stated that it has officially sought help. But then he secretly reveals that Apple refused.
ED has been informed that a password is required to retrieve any data.

The prosecution wants evidence allegedly found on the iPhone
Kejriwal and his aides are specifically accused of corruption in relation to the alcohol policy drafted in 2020/2021. According to the post, the Prime Minister stated that he had then updated his iPhone, meaning the old data was no longer available.
The pretrial detention sentence lasts seven days, although it is not clear when it began this week. But what is most telling is that India's general elections are taking place over an extended period, starting on April 19, 2024.
Kejriwal's supporters claim that the arrest and imprisonment are politically motivated as the emergency department is under government control.
Apple has not commented on the iPhone unlock request. The company has a policy of providing certain information to law enforcement when subpoenaed, but it never unlocks iPhones.
Separately, Apple CEO Tim Cook has met current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi several times. India has become increasingly important to Apple as it moves away from over-reliance on China for its production.
