Once operational, it will be able to meet the average annual electricity needs of more than 1,40,000 households.
RWE, the UK's largest electricity producer and one of the biggest promoters of renewable energy, has already started construction of its first seven solar farms in the UK, which will have a capacity of 330 megawatts (MW).
These are the first projects implemented from the development portfolio RWE acquired last year as a result of the acquisition of project promoter JBM Solar. The portfolio totals approximately 3.8 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity and 2.3 GW of battery storage projects.
Work has already started in the center and south of England, and in the future, solar projects are guaranteed to be linked to battery storage to improve grid utilization.
Katja Wunschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe and Australia, said it was “an important milestone” for the company, adding that the projects “will play a key role in further decarbonising the UK's electricity generation and achieving its ambitious climate targets”.
Construction is being carried out by British companies Ethical Power and Equance Solar & Storage, and the first solar park is expected to be operational this year.
Once operational, the seven plants will be able to meet the average annual electricity needs of 140,000 homes in the UK.
RWE aims to bring an average of 450 MW of new solar power into operation annually in the UK by 2030, supporting the country's target of 70 GW of solar by 2035. Overall, RWE plans to increase its installed solar capacity from the current 3. 9 GW to 16 GW by 2030.
