“As with most skin care habits, the answer is: it depends,” says dermatologist Helen He, MD. If you have oily skin and sweat at night, it may be important to skip this step.

He continues: “While sleeping at night, you are also likely to transfer residue from the pillowcase to your face, and therefore you will benefit from thoroughly cleansing your face in the morning to remove these substances that may clog your pores.”
If your skin is dry, you can skip this cleansing routine. “Excessive cleansing can strip the skin barrier of lipids that make up the skin's outer barrier, making the skin more susceptible to irritation and eczema.”
