The region received the triple distinction at the 31st European World Travel Awards held tonight at the Ritz Cartellon in Berlin, Germany.
Madeira was chosen for the tenth time as the best island destination in Europe, Porto Santo distinguished itself as the best beach, and the Madeira Promotion Association ranked it as the best tourist destination.
The area rated better than 12 other islands that were also in the vote. In the race with Madeira for this award, the Azores, Canary Islands, Ibiza, Mallorca (Spain), Crete, Cyclades (Greece), Sardinia, Sicily (Italy), Malta, Cyprus, Guernsey and Jersey (United Kingdom) won.
The region has already won the Best Island Destination in Europe award in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023. On December 1, 2023, Madeira was awarded the Best Island Destination in the World award, at the WTA World Edition, which happened for the ninth time.
For the first time in these awards, Porto Santo won in the category “Best Beach Destination in Europe”, beating the Algarve and also Cannes (France), Corfu and Costa Navarino (Greece), Mallorca and Marbella (Spain) and Sardinia (Italy).
The Madeira Promotion Association also received the “Best Tourist Destination in Europe” award, which competed with 13 other nominees such as the French Tourism Board, the Austrian Tourism Board, the Croatian Tourism Board, the Irish Tourism Board, the German Tourism Board, the Hellenic Tourism Board, and the Tourism Institute. Spanish, Italian Tourism, Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Slovenian Tourism, Portuguese Tourism and Visit England.
At the ceremony held this evening in Berlin, it was also announced that Madeira will host two international World Travel Awards ceremonies next November. These are the World Golf Awards, scheduled for November 22, and the World Travel Awards, which will be held on November 24. Both will be held at the Savoy Palace.
The World Travel Awards were established in 1993 and are awarded annually to honour, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries. The World Travel Awards are considered the “Oscars” of tourism and the most prestigious awards granted in this sector.
