Acre is in a state of emergency due to floods
The Akko government declared a public health emergency due to the floods. Almost all cities in the state were affected by the floods.
Rio Branco is the city most affected by the floods. This Saturday (the first), the level of the Akka River rose again. Its height exceeded 17 meters and 50 centimetres, and the floods affected the lives of more than 60,000 residents.
Mrs. Ana Lucia lives in an area close to the central area of the capital, Akko, and can only leave the house by boat. But she resists and hopes she won't have to leave.
Reporter: “In that case, can you just get out of there by boat?”
Ana Lucia: “Only by boat, only by boat, there is no other option.”
This is one of the main ways to reach one of the oldest neighborhoods in the capital. Here, the water has already advanced and is preventing vehicles from passing.
The Rio Branco Civil Defense is working to help more than 6,000 homeless people in schools and at Exhibition Park, where there are more than 2,000 people.
“We will continue to provide care in shelters and transport families until necessary,” says Lieutenant Colonel Claudio Falcao.
In addition to Rio Branco, the situation is considered critical in almost the entire state.
The State Government on Saturday (2) published the Public Health Emergency Decree in an additional edition of the Official Gazette. This measure applies to 19 out of 22 municipalities in Akko, including the capital.
The government claims that the decree will enable the release of resources to combat diseases that tend to increase after river floods.
In Brasilia, the level of the Acre River has already exceeded the alert level. Now, a task force is trying to free the streets, which are still covered in a lot of mud and debris.
A federal government task force, composed of different ministries, will head to Acre on Monday (4) to provide assistance to residents affected by the floods.
