Caracas, April 30, 2021 (LUSA) – Pope Francis today expressed his desire to visit Venezuela, the country where today José Gregorio Hernandez, the Venezuelan known as the “Doctor of the Poor”, was beatified.

The wish was conveyed in a video released by the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference, on the occasion of the beatification, which took place in the Church of Colegio de La Salle, in Caracas, and was broadcast live on television and radio in the country, using Vale. In the letter, in the Castilian language, the Pope also expressed his concern and closeness to the situation in Venezuela, and explained: “Like my brother Bishops, I am well aware of the situation you are experiencing and realize that your long-term pain and pain has diminished. “Today, I am so present, so many dead, so many people infected with the Coronavirus that they have paid their lives to keep their jobs in precarious conditions (…). Pope Francis also stressed that all Venezuelans, the “sons of the Blessed” José Gregorio Hernández, “have the same rights” and that, as he knows well, he also knows “the faith and great hopes of the Venezuelan people”.
On the other hand, he asked the Venezuelans to seek the unity of the country, in the face of “all difficulties” and to follow the “wonderful example of unblessed service” of the new blessed.

José Gregorio Hernandez was born on October 26, 1864, in Esnot, in the state of Trujillo, 700 kilometers southwest of Caracas, and died of being run over by him on January 29, 1919, in La Pastora, in the Venezuelan capital, shortly after he left home to visit the patient.
Author of 13 scientific articles recognized by the Venezuelan Academy of Medicine, José Gregorio Hernandez has emerged in the treatment of diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and yellow fever, as well as in the fields of pathology, bacteria, parasites and physiology, after discovering a new form of angina pectoris of malaria.
He was also a recognized teacher and spoke several languages, including Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, English, Italian and Latin.
Among the miracles analyzed by the Vatican is one of a 10-year-old girl, Yaxori Solorzano, who was shot in the head during an attack.
With a poor prognosis due to the loss of brain mass, the girl recovered after her mother applied to Jose Gregorio Hernandez.
The remains were found in the Church of Nossa Senhora de La Candelária, established by immigrants from the Canary Islands, in La Candelária, in the Venezuelan capital, an area with a large presence of Portuguese immigrants.
According to the Venezuelan press, more than 2,100 cases of treatment have been attributed to the “doctor of the poor”.
