Pinto da Costa was caught in phone conversations with Jorge Mendes and Bruno Macedo discussing player transfers. For example, in an eavesdropping on May 13, 2019, the senior agent spoke to Pinto da Costa about goalkeeper José Sa's transfer to Greek club Olympiacos: “I can tell the lawyer, because it is the president who has to give the instructions, of which Gestiute owns 10%. [de comissão no negócio]”. Pinto da Costa answers: “Yes.” Mendes took the opportunity to ask about the players that the Porto club president will continue to sell, and he replied: “I have already sold everything. (…) Felipe leaves, Militao leaves, Herrera leaves, Brahimi leaves, it's a lot of fruit.”
At the heart of this process are doubts about operations that may have caused losses to the state, on a financial level, and to FC Porto. Basically, what is at stake is an alleged scheme to manipulate expenses and revenues in the purchase or sale of the rights of football players, to generate unaccounted and hidden funds or to attribute undue advantages to third parties.Eavesdropping operations were carried out in the investigation which led to two independent operations: “Operation Red Card”, in which Luis Felipe Vieira, former president of Benfica, was accused, and “Operation Prolongation”, in which the companies Altice and FC were implicated. Porto. When the “extension” was opened in November 2021, the wiretaps of the 14 suspects were sent to the new investigation. For this operation, dozens of banking and subject matter attachments, documents containing the tax details of the suspects were also sent.
Bruno proposed the creation of an academy for Benfica to Pinto da Costa
Creating an academy for FC Porto's young players similar to Benfica's academy, in Seixal, was Bruno Macedo's idea. It was the players' agent himself who revealed this situation to Giuliano Bertolucci, also the footballers' agent, in a telephone conversation on December 7, 2018. At the time, Bruno Macedo was under surveillance, but both were unaware of the situation.
The content of that conversation was as follows: “Bruno says that he was saying that he had an idea about starting a company, which they presented to the president (Jorge Pinto da Costa) today and that he gave the green light to do it. Bruno explains that Porto needs to establish a training center and academy and they have provided him with the financial project. He states that it is a high investment, to do what Benfica is doing, and that it will be an investment of more than 30 million. [de euros]”.According to Bruno Macedo, the academy was created “jointly between Porto and BMG [Banco Minas Gerais]BMG backed the investment and then retained a proportion of all Porto players who left the academy over the next ten years. For those who have come up with these ideas, “we should have a little role there.”details
