São Paulo, February 20, 2024 (BIREME/OPAS/WHO) – The evaluation and selection of Brazilian journals for the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) database represents a milestone in the scenario of scientific research communication between countries of the region. This annual process, coordinated in partnership between the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Brazilian Ministry of Health, is essential for the modernization and continuous improvement of the Latin American and Caribbean Center for Health Sciences Information (BIREME /PAHO/WHO).
From 2024 onwards, journals will be selected for inclusion in the database in April. BIREME's Supervisor of Reference Information Resources, Sule Mitiko Yano Suga, stresses that it is important for editors to update their calendars according to the new date, so that they are prepared, as the change will have impacts on other activities in the annual calendar. “Starting in March, evaluation forms will be available for editors to complete; the evaluation committee is scheduled to meet in October, and the results will be published afterward,” explains Solé.
On December 11, 2023, the experts of the LILACS Brasil Journal Evaluation and Selection Committee gathered for the 24th edition of this important event. The process began in July of the same year, with eleven journals submitted, however, after prior analysis for standardization and scope, only seven were selected for further evaluation.
As a result, two journals were approved with restrictions, after applying the standardization and committee recommendations, while five other journals did not receive approval. Accredited journals with restrictions include “Saberes Plurais” and “Revista contexto & Saúde”, while non-accredited journals include titles such as “Revista Corpoconsciência”, “Debates em Psiquiatria”, “Health Residency Journal”, and “Revista Pró-UniverSUS”. and “Journal of Collective Health.”
The committee members, who are renowned experts in different fields of health sciences, played an essential role in this process, conducting careful and informed analyses:
- Adilton Alves Brandao, from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation
- Andre Luiz Felix Rudaki, from the Federal University of Paraná
- Antonio de Padova Bethon Sereno, from the Universidad Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho
- Edna Fracón de Souza Montero, from the University of São Paulo
- Maria Helena Palucci Marciali, from the University of São Paulo
- Marie Sandra Carlotto, University of Brasilia
- Sigmar de Mello Ruud, from the Universidad Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho

This careful process highlights the ongoing commitment to excellence in selecting scientific journals for the LILACS database. In addition to promoting the dissemination of scientific knowledge, it contributes to the advancement of health research and practices not only in Brazil, but throughout Latin America.
