Amidst the gradual development, which took a long time to get started, women have gained a space in sports broadcasting, bringing a different perspective and expressive quality just like the predominantly male segment. Reporter Natalie Guedra, ESPN's Europe correspondent for seven seasons, gave an exclusive interview with Torcedores.com and mentioned the main difference between the practice of British and Brazilian sports journalism.
In the UK, Natalie notes that there are fewer women working in sports coverage, a figure that represents almost 100% of former athletes, but she highlights a very different situation of “hidden bias” on Brazilian broadcasters.
“Look, I think there are more working women in Brazil. But at the same time, I think they are different aspects. For example, here I think we see a lot of older women in the video. In Brazil, it seems like you have to look a certain way.” And a certain age. 'She's getting older' happens a lot. That doesn't exist here,” the journalist reveals.
Repeated actions remain
Despite the disparity between fan cultures in South America and Europe, journalists working on the Old Continent are still victims of harassment. In the last edition of the World Cup, which was held on Russian soil, Natalie Guedra faced an incident in which a fan tried to kiss her while she was working. She was not the only professional in the international press who reported on this type of practice.
A similar incident happened last Wednesday night (07) with journalist Jessica Dias, also from ESPN. During her backstage coverage of Flamengo's duel against Velez, at the Maracanã, she ended up becoming the target of direct harassment. The business owner was arrested and ordered into preventive detention, but was granted release on Thursday.
