The Flamengo striker is Augusto de Melo's dream
In his first press conference as the new Corinthians president, Augusto de Mello confirmed his interest Timon By signing Gabriel Barbosa, Flamengo striker.
Melo stated that the conversation between the two clubs is “advanced” and that completing the deal “depends on them.”
“He is an athlete who interests us and has our characteristics. Melo explained: “We did our part, and we know that it is difficult. He is one of the best players in the country, and he is a role model wherever he plays.”
The director continued his praise of the 27-year-old player: “He has our characteristics. It will be a dream. If it doesn't work, we have a backup and third plan and we will implement it. No investor.”
Gabriel Barbosa has a contract with Flamengo until the end of 2024, with a termination clause of €21 million, a sum the Corinthians president admitted he is unable to pay.
However, the signing of the player will continue Augusto de Mello's vision for his team in 2024: “The big surprises will come, we will not give up on having a team that wins everything. I'm a Corinthians fan and I know what we went through last year.
In 2023, Corinthians finished 13th in the Brazilian League and did not win any title.
Gabriel Barbosa had his least productive season since arriving at Flamengo (in 2019), scoring 20 goals in 58 appearances. In total, the striker, who played for Benfica in 2017, has scored 141 goals for the Rio de Janeiro club.
