During the New Year period, around 190 health centers in Portugal will maintain complementary care, following an initiative similar to the one implemented over Christmas. The measure is intended to ensure users receive primary care in non-emergency situations during the New Year's long weekend.
Today, Saturday, December 30, a total of 233 health units will be operated nationwide. On Sunday, December 31, 193 health centers will be available to meet the needs of residents. Monday is an official holiday and the first day of 2024, and also on Tuesday, January 2, 187 health centers will be operating.
This initiative falls within the strategic plan for the seasonal health response – winter 2023-2024, which is implemented by groups of health centers and regional health departments, in coordination with the Executive Directorate of the National Health Service. Its purpose is to shift demand from hospital emergency services to primary care in cases of non-emergency acute illness.
To ensure an effective response, users are advised to contact SNS24 before going to hospital emergency rooms. The measure aims to relieve pressure on emergency services in hospitals, allowing more convenient care at other points of the NHS. In cases of non-emergency conditions, such as mild to moderate respiratory symptoms, residents can contact SNS 24 for advice and, if necessary, be referred to the nearest health unit. In emergency cases, call 112.
The Ministry of Health appreciates and thanks the commitment of health workers, especially during this holiday season, and wishes all residents a new year full of health and wellness. Appropriate use of health services is essential for the proper functioning and coordination of a network of SNSs and services, especially in times of increased demand.
