In 2023, the federal government reformulated the Mais Médicos program to make it more attractive to the country's professionals and increase the length of stay in the program, especially in the most vulnerable and difficult-to-reach areas that have historically suffered from a shortage of doctors. One of the new features announced was the opportunity to specialize in family and community medicine and a master's degree in family health. On Wednesday (27), the Ministry of Health held the first batch of the unprecedented specialized course in family and community medicine for more than 15,000 specialists who joined the program during the year.
The specialization will take place in partnership with eight higher education institutions: Fiocruz Mato Grosso do Sul, Federal University of Amazonas, Federal University of Ceará, Federal University of Maranhão, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Federal University of Santa Catarina, University of Brasilia and Federal University of São Paulo. The aim is to regionalize the educational offer, decentralizing and maintaining regional characteristics, with plans to expand the offer to other institutions.
A survey conducted by the department showed that 41% of program participants had given up searching for training and qualifications in the past. Upon resumption, Mais Médicos offers professionals opportunities for qualification and improvement, as well as incentives and benefits. In this context, throughout the course, doctors will come into contact with topics relevant to clinical practice and daily procedures developed by family health teams, increasing the degree of solution in primary care, the main gateway to enter SUS, consistent with its characteristics and focused on the needs of the population throughout the national territory. .
“Mais Médicos is a great national strategy for training specialists. It is expected that in the coming years each family health team will have a specialist doctor, which will significantly improve the service provided to communities,” explains Program Director of the Primary Care Secretariat, Felipe Proenço, adding Brazil currently has more than 50,000 family health teams and more than 10,000 family and community doctors.
