The North American House of Representatives, with a Republican majority, agreed on Wednesday, December 13, to open a formal investigation to impeach the country’s president, Joe Biden.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives of Congress justified the Republicans’ decision by the White House’s refusal to respond to his requests for information.
The investigation aims to determine whether Biden unjustifiably benefited from the foreign business of his son, Hunter Biden. The vote took place hours after Hunter refused to testify behind closed doors, saying he would only speak publicly for fear his words would be distorted.
“There is no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because he did not,” Hunter Biden said.
Investigations have not yet revealed any evidence of misconduct on the part of the US President.
The White House downplayed the investigation, saying it was baseless and politically motivated. Biden is preparing for a possible rematch with his predecessor, Donald Trump, in 2024. Trump was the first president in US history to be impeached twice, and is currently preparing to face four trials in court.
The investigation will almost certainly not lead to Biden leaving the White House. Even if the House of Representatives votes to impeach the president, the Senate will have to vote to convict him, by at least two-thirds of the votes. This is practically impossible, given that the Democrats have the majority.
