The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) participated in an official gala in favor of childhood health in the Noble Hall of the Chamber of Deputies of Brasilia (DF). The event, held at the request of federal MP Zakaria Kalil (Uniao-GO), Chair of the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Health and the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Early Childhood, highlighted the debate on the public health needs of children with atopic dermatitis.
On this occasion, the CFM was represented by Dr. Yascara Pinheiro Lajes Pinto, Federal Counselor and Coordinator of the Technical Chamber of Dermatology. She stressed that atopic dermatitis is one of the major chronic inflammatory skin diseases in children, is associated with many comorbidities (asthma, food allergies, etc.) and has a significant impact on education and the quality of life of children and their families.
Rights – Representative Kalil noted that the universal rights of children are essential to ensure that everyone can enjoy a life of dignity, with health, education, protection and equal opportunities. Recognizing that, unfortunately, there are still many children who lack access to these basic rights, putting their development and well-being at risk,
“Among the various issues affecting children’s health, atopic dermatitis is a disease that deserves our full attention. It is a chronic skin condition characterized by inflammation and severe itching. It is estimated that up to 20% of Brazilian children suffer from atopic dermatitis. This represents An alarming number. It is not just an aesthetic problem, but a condition that can cause significant physical and emotional discomfort in affected children. Severe itching can interfere with sleep, school performance and daily activities, as well as increasing the risk of secondary infections, said Zakaria Kalil.
Jaskara Lages also stressed that CFM is available for cooperation with health policies that serve that part of the population that suffers from atopic dermatitis and deserves attention from public authorities. To this end, she noted that the topic should be discussed taking into account aspects such as the prevalence of atopic dermatitis, the heterogeneity of the affected population, unmet needs, different therapeutic options, and the need to define criteria to indicate high-quality treatments.
