With the introduction of the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple introduced a new action button to replace the common volume profile key. This is a contentious decision among American smartphone fans, but it should be replicated on the iPhone 16.
In fact, new rumors suggest that the action button will be implemented in all models of the iPhone 16 line, arriving in September 2024. Thus, this will be the end of the volume profile switch on the iPhone.
The action button will be present on every iPhone 16
This data was highlighted by a MacRumors publication, which found strong evidence of this change in Apple smartphones. Please note that this little button will undergo some changes for the next generation of iOS devices.
First, Apple wants to move to a capacitive solution, i.e. get rid of the physical button to give us something similar to the iPhone SE’s home button. The same approach that has been speculated for months for the iPhone 15.
This regenerative action button will have a pressure sensor and a “tactile toggle function”. It is not yet clear what the last point means, so we will have to wait for further clarification.
With this change, Apple intends to bring more features to the action button of the iPhone 16. Note that the approach in the iPhone 15 Pro is already comprehensive, but Apple may reserve some additional assets for its next generation.
The source indicates that prototypes of the upcoming iPhone 16 were seen with the aforementioned action button, and as the development process progressed, these details did not change, which indicates that Apple is intent on bringing it to the furniture of its upcoming devices.
Regarding the iPhone 16, Apple is preparing to add a “Capture” button on the right side of these models. This will be a shortcut to capture images and should be capacitive as well.
The next iPhone SE will also have an action button
It is also said that the action button will also be part of the next generation iPhone SE. In other words, Apple wants to get rid of the volume key from its smartphones once and for all.
This affordable model is only expected to be unveiled in 2025. Before then, we’ll find out if Apple is truly committed to this approach when the iPhone 16 is unveiled next year.
