Mauricio Melem, a doctor specializing in public health, took over the leadership of the health authorities in the region in October this year. The responsible person states that he intends to unify the procedures of the health authorities in the region, modernize them and become increasingly closer to citizens to respond to their needs.

In the autonomous community of Madeira, there is a local health authority in each municipality. The Regional Health Authority is responsible for deciding on state intervention in defense of public health towards citizens, that is, in situations that may endanger the well-being of the population.
To protect public health, the Health Authority carries out health surveillance, protects environmental issues, and can, if necessary, order the suspension of activity or the closure of establishments when they pose a risk to public health.
