The Gulbenkian and La Caixa Foundations have allocated support amounting to 750,000 euros to five research projects in the field of health in Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique, over the next three years, to enhance training in the field of clinical research.
“Five women will conduct research projects in the fields of cancer, malaria, respiratory diseases and genetics over the next three years, in Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique, as part of the ‘We’Search – Supporting Clinical Research Projects at PALOP’ programme.”, in partnership between the Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian and the La Caixa Foundation, the two entities announced this Thursday in a statement sent to Lusa.
The text also adds that the projects now awarded have been selected “from 75 applications and focus on a range of chronic diseases that particularly affect the population of these countries”, which explains the aim of each project: “to enhance skills in clinical research in research centres, and to enhance Knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.
Since 2015, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Spanish La Caixa Foundation have been collaborating in the field of health research in African Portuguese-speaking countries (PALOP).
At the end of 2022, they signed a cooperation protocol to develop a program that encourages the scientific community in countries to implement research projects that contribute to improving health care delivery.
“Thus was born the We’Search programme, a competition to strengthen scientific institutions and clinical research projects at PALOP, in an initiative that represents a total commitment of 750,000 euros for the two institutions,” the statement said.
