The main point of friction remains Taiwan. China claims the island as its own province and does not rule out the use of force to achieve reunification. Washington is Taipei’s main ally and arms supplier.
The statement issued by Chinese diplomacy noted that although there are still many issues to be resolved, the two sides believe it is “useful and necessary” to maintain dialogue.
Wang’s visit to the United States is the latest in a series of high-level contacts between the two countries, aimed at stabilizing increasingly tense relations.
The statement quoted Wang as saying that China and the United States need to “return to Bali,” referring to the meeting between Xi and Biden on the sidelines of the G20 summit last year, in which the two officials discussed issues related to Taiwan. Trade tensions or cooperation in the areas of climate change, health and food security.
The Chinese diplomat said that the two countries should “eliminate interference, overcome obstacles, enhance consensus, and collect results.”
Other issues included military exchange, financial, technological and cultural cooperation, or crises in the Middle East and Ukraine.
