Energy Minister Israel Katz warned, at a time when the humanitarian situation was deteriorating, saying: “Not a single electricity switch will be turned on, not a single tap will be opened, and not a single truck loaded with fuel will cross the border until all the hostages are released.” The situation is worsening hourly in the Strip, which has a population of 2.3 million and has been exposed since Saturday to the deadliest bombings in 75 years of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
More than 1,400 people died, 6,200 others were injured, and more than 300,000 people were displaced. The International Red Cross warned on Thursday that the last fuel for the electric generators supplying crowded hospitals was about to run out.
The organization’s regional director, Fabrizio Carbone, warned that “without energy, hospitals will turn into morgues,” warning of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in the region, while the United Nations condemned the “collective punishment” to which the residents of Gaza are subjected.
US President Joe Biden said: “I understand the frustration and anger of the Israeli people, but Israel must respect the Geneva Convention,” calling for “restraint.”
