C(Almost) everyone knows that potatoes should be washed. This is very important because the shells accumulate harmful germs. So, Chef Cat Fields White, featured on Martha Stewart’s website, explains how to wash this beloved vegetable.
First, it is recommended that you soak the potatoes in cold water before cleaning them to get rid of the dirt stuck in them. “It’s like soaking a dish of dry food—just loosen things up so you don’t have to scrub them,” he explains.

When the dirt finally loosens, he explains, “Take the potatoes out of the water and scrub them gently, one at a time, with a clean brush or a new soft scrubbing pad, used only for cleaning vegetables.”
It is recommended to wash potatoes with thinner and more delicate skins by hand. Then wash the potatoes individually and finally remove any remaining dirt.
He also explains that potatoes should be cooked immediately after washing because germs can accumulate on the skin when they are stored (and wet) for a long time.
