The secret to the “perfect match” may be in your face. That’s the promise of SciMatch, a dating app that claims to use facial recognition and artificial intelligence to help you find your perfect match — all from a single selfie taken when you sign up.
The idea is to use a special algorithm to scan people’s faces for personality and lifestyle characteristics. The profiles are then matched with other users with compatible characteristics, with a success rate of 87%, according to Business Insider — a total the developer is proud to point out is higher than that of Tinder.
Although what happens behind the scenes is very complex, based on high technology and social studies, SciMatch also seeks to attract attention through its simplicity. Instead of stuffed profiles and pressure to choose interesting photos, all it takes is a regular selfie and nothing else for the program to work.
In its free version, all functions are available, as contacts can chat with each other according to the groups created by the application. Those who purchase the premium version can help the algorithm find better matches based on photos of celebrities and everyday people they consider beautiful, with facial recognition to find users with similar features.

Behind the app’s operation is an artificial intelligence called Ruby, which uses machine learning to understand photos and optimize matches for each registered user. It was programmed by sisters Yanina and Victoria Strelets based on a study conducted by Northwest Polytechnic University in Xi’an, China, which identified five basic personalities that can be inferred from people’s faces.
Characteristics include extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Ruby was then taught how to recognize such characters from a public facial recognition database, with millions of images. Now, with the launch of the app, this database continues to grow, along with concerns about privacy, similar to other apps that also rely on this technology.
SciMatch is available exclusively for iPhone (internal control Department).
